Tokyo International University is in Kawagoe, Saitama, which retains something
of a flavor of Edo. It consists of 5 schools whose major focuses are on commerce,
economics, international relations, language communication and other human and
social sciences. National Taiwan University, in Taipei, is the flagship public
university in Taiwan. It was originally founded as the Taihoku Imperial University
of the Japanese Empire in 1928, and, in 2004, expanded to 11 colleges, 54 departments,
96 graduate institutes. Over the past five decades, National Taiwan Normal University,
also in Taipei, has kept the highest of standards for the preparation of teachers
and intellectuals and played a leading role not only in the growth of Taiwan's
higher and secondary education, but also with the international university community.
Shu Te University, in Kaohsiung, is a new university of science and technology
and aims to produce qualified professionals equipped with the broad knowledge
base, specialized technological expertise, creativity, and experience needed
for the 21st Century.
In our joint presentation by university students from Japan and Taiwan, we chose
the topic "International Support in an Earthquake Disaster" because
Japan and Taiwan have had many earthquakes. It's been already a few years since
we had big earthquakes in the 90's. Since then, people's attitude toward international
support has been changing in Taiwan and Japan, and accordingly, international
support systems have been revised. Given the present growing globalization around
the world, we research and suggest how Japan and Taiwan, where many earthquakes
happen, can take an international role. We hope you pay attention to differences
in support system and suggestion between Japan and Taiwan.
